Visiting the estate is free and the owners provide tea and cakes to anyone visiting the plantation also without charge. For a small fee, guests are also invited to visit the museum and find out more about the history of the estate and its journey from failed coffee plantation to its modern day form as one of the highest quality tea producers in the world, exporting to internationally renowned tea houses such as Mariage Frères in Paris.
The Handunugoda tea estate focuses on quality over quantity, in particular looking into the health benefits offered by certain types of tea and the Virgin White Tea is not artificially amended by humans. After a tour there is the free tea and cake and the opportunity to try and buy many different types of tea either to take back to your villa, or to offer as the perfect gift to someone back home. Tours tend to last around an hour, though with the hospitality levels as they are, it is very easy to spend much more time at the beautiful estate. As the estate is located just a ten minute drive from the coast – laying claims to be the closest tea plantation to the sea in the world – there is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beautiful beaches in the vicinity after your relaxing tour.
