An Interview with Amrith, a Surf Instructor in Sri Lanka

Surfing is at the top of the list of fun-filled activities and those in the know have been renting luxury villas on Sri Lanka’s southern coast for years to enjoy the high-adrenaline pursuit. The varied waves, warm water and consistent offshore winds, mean that both experts and beginners will enjoy the conditions at these prime surf spots. Dynamic Lives, a luxury Sri Lanka villas specialist, spoke to Amrith a surf instructor from Soul and Surf to find out more about the island’s surfing scene.

Which is your favourite beach to surf on?

There’s no one in particular. Each instructor probably has his/her favourite, but we rotate through a few different beaches depending on the surf level of the guests and what the surf conditions are on the day. Some of the common ones that we frequent are Kabalana beach for the beginner lessons, Sticks, Lazy Lefts, Lazy Rights for the intermediates.

What makes Sri Lanka a great surfing destination?

The South-West coast of Sri Lanka, where we’re located, benefits from a very diverse coastline, with a mixture of reefs, beach breaks & point breaks that make for an interesting choice of waves. It also benefits from rather good wind patterns during the season allowing for evening surf on most days.

Sri Lanka is an up and coming luxury destination. How have you seen the surfing industry change as a result?

This is really just our first season here, so we’re probably the change that people speak of!

Is Sri Lanka a good place for beginner surfers to go? Which beach is best for beginners?

It is. Weligama bay is probably where most of the casual tourists go, as there’s a lot of surf rental and schools right on the beach. Plus it’s a very easy wave to get started on, but it get’s pretty crowded.

Which is the best beach to watch the sunset?

Any nice clean beach with a cafe is good. A bit of cloud cover is really when the sunsets pop.

Which is your favourite beach restaurant/bar?

Cafe Ceylon and Wijaya are good places to grab a bite.

Where do clients stay when visiting Sri Lanka? Do you know any luxury villas that are near the beaches? Do you know of any luxury villas that are close to the surf?

We provide all-inclusive stays out of two stunning villas. However, we’re located a bit more inland along the backwaters. Many luxury villas are being built in great locations on the coast of Sri Lanka and make for spectacular locations for a family holiday.
