San Rafael is another interior town with a workers attitude and home to Can Pilot, one of Ibiza’s most traditional and well-loved restaurants. Nearby aretwo of the world’s most famous clubs, Amnesia and Privilege. Driving through the heart of the island takes you past ancient farmhouses, olive groves, contemporary villas and fields dotted with goats and sheep providing a bucolic scene.
One little known place that is worth a stop is the Sagrat Cor de Jesús or the Scared Heart of Jesus: a 23-metre statue of Christ that boasts some of the most magnificent views on the island. The story goes that during the civil war the people of the area hid a priest within the woodlands. He promised to build them a monument if he survived. And there it sits today, in a little village called Monte Cristo – just off the main highway from Ibiza to San Antonio – little visited but definitely worth a detour when you’re cruising the island during your holidays.
