Top 20 Chamonix

Apart from the obvious - skiing & snowboarding - here is the Dynamic Lives' list of the

Top 20 things to do in Chamonix, in the Alps this winter - 2010/2011.

Top 20 things to do in Chamonix this winter

  • 1. Heli skiing in Courmayeur, Italy, followed by luxury barbecue lunch in the sun at Le Petit Mont Blanc in Val Veny
  • 2. Fresh Tracks! Book & bag the first cable car to the top of Les Grands Montets on a powder morning
  • 3. Afternoon tea at Hotel L’Oustelet – a secret haven in Chamonix
  • 4. Taking a dip in the snow surrounded steaming outdoor swimming pool of the Hotel Les Aiglons and looking up at majestic Mont Blanc
  • 5. Skiing the whole of the Chamonix Valley in one day – start at Les Houches in the early morning; take the bus to Brevent mid morning, get the Liaison across to Flegere. Then jump on the bus at Flegere, after lunch, and go up to Argentiere to ski Les Grands Montets. Catch another bus mid afternoon to Le Tour, ski over to Vallorcine & take the Mont Blanc Express train back to Chamonix at the end of the day – be warned this is 20 km+
  • 6. Do the whole valley by train & tram - take the Mont Blanc Express train from Vallorcine to St Gervais Les Bains, then take the Tramway du Mont Blanc up to Bellvue des Houches and then the Prarion cable car back down to Les Houches where you can pick up the train MBE back to Chamonix. Very eco-friendly & charmingly old-fashioned
  • 7. Back country ski tour across to Switzerland from Le Tour – le Col de Balme
  • 8. Skiing La Vallee Blanche with a guide like Remy Lecluse who will take you on alternative route to the most popular one – we like Le Vraie Vallee Blanche or Le Glacier Noir that you tackle from the Italian/Courmayeur side from the Helbronner cable car
  • 9. Taking a helicopter to Megeve to eat at the Domaine de la Sasse a restaurant specialising in bison beef from its own herd of mountain grazed bison
  • 10. A night time skiddoo trip up to La Grolla from the Courmayeur heliport in the dark – James Bond style, before eating a delicious dinner in a traditional mountain restaurant with contemporary designer furnishings
  • 11. Taking a late cable car up to L’Aiguille du Midi to watch the sun set and change the colours of the snowy mountain sides, as well as admiring the view of 3 countries, before getting the last lift down to Chamonix
  • 12. Sipping a huge hot chocolate and tucking into a piping hot cheese croute at La Cremerie du Glacier d’Argentiere, after scrambling down the unpisted Hotel run from the Refuge de Lognan
  • 13.Taking the tiny Arp cable car to the top of Cresta d’Arp in Courmayeur to ski easily the accessible and skiable fresh powder off piste in the Col d’Arp
  • 14. A 'Hot Stone' massage back at the chalet after really hitting the slopes hard
  • 15. Parapenting from the mid station at Plan de l’Aiguille or from Le Brevent
  • 16. Hiking from Argentiere Village to Flegere in the summer – a stunning mountain walk along the Valley in the sun.
  • 17. Spending the night at Chalet Refuge de Lognan between the Glacier d’Argentiere and Les Grand Montets. Just ski over from the last lift at 4.30pm and enjoy mountain drinks, supper, and blanket up in bed – don’t worry they have hot showers and heating as well as a good fireplace
  • 18. The closing parties on Les Grands Montets – base jumpers, speed riders, BBQs hot tubs at the bottom of the run, DJs and (hopefully) fresh snow in May
  • 19. Have a chef cook you a lunch with a view! Skin up to the Albert Premier refuge with a guide & a private chef and enjoy a high altitude gourmet lunch
  • 20. Flying over the peak of Mont Blanc... by helicopter - CMBH do tourism in true style!
